THE SHELTER

[JAPAN] [TEAM COMPETITION] [2013]

The shelter represents our endeavor to rethink the relationship between architecture and temporality. This consideration is embedded in our design process, which begins with Analytical Design (Geometric), transitions to Experimental Design, and ultimately evolves into Digital Design (Sculptural). Our aim was to manifest this progression in the design of the shelter.

We chose to position the shelter on water, primarily in recognition of Japan— the country that inspired this design, where the land comprises numerous small islands making terrestrial space precious. Secondly, we opted for timber as the primary construction material due to its lightweight properties, which aid in buoyancy.

Sustainability and high energy efficiency are key objectives in our architectural approach. To that end, we view sea waves as a valuable renewable energy source for power generation. Additionally, the ceiling structure is designed to harvest rainwater for plant irrigation, further underscoring our commitment to sustainable design principles.
